As the weather cools and we trade open windows for cozy blankets and furnace heat, the air inside our homes becomes more important than ever. Fall is the perfect time to refresh your home’s air quality, and one of the most effective ways to do that is by having your air ducts professionally cleaned.
PURE MITTEN Air Duct Cleaning, a trusted local Michigan company, is helping families across Livingston County breathe easier as we head into the colder months. If you’ve been putting off duct cleaning, here’s why now is the ideal time to schedule it.

Why Fall & Early Winter Are the Best Time for Duct Cleaning
Once the furnace kicks on, everything sitting inside your ductwork begins circulating through your home — dust, allergens, pet hair, construction debris, and even mold spores. After a summer of open windows, pollen, and humidity, your ducts collect more than you might think.

Cleaning your ducts before winter helps:
✔ Improve Indoor Air Quality
Kids, pets, and adults with allergies or asthma feel the difference when the air is cleaner and less dusty.
✔ Reduce Fall & Winter Allergies
Ragweed, leaf debris, and summer pollen settle in ducts. Removing them helps prevent flare‑ups once the heat starts running.
✔ Boost Furnace Efficiency
A clean system doesn’t have to work as hard, which can help lower energy bills during Michigan’s coldest months.
✔ Remove Pet Hair & Dander
If you have pets, duct cleaning is one of the best ways to reduce lingering odors and airborne allergens.
✔ Clear Out Construction Dust
If you’ve remodeled, painted, or sanded anything this year, your ducts likely collected debris.

How should I prepare for my air duct cleaning appointment?
The technicians will need to access the furnace and ducts, and all of the supply and return registers in your home, so ensure those areas are accessible the day of your service appointment. Do not remove vent covers; they use specialized tools designed to fit through the covers so there's no need to remove them. They will need to turn off your HVAC system while they are cleaning so just beware of that and dress accordingly. Please secure any and all pets before technicians arrive.
How long does air duct cleaning take?
From start to finish, residential air duct cleaning can take between 1 1/2 hours to 4 hours, depending on the HVAC layout and size of the home.
What is your air duct cleaning process?
First, the techs block off all registers. Then they attach the extraction hose to your main return trunk line, creating negative pressure. Next, they go to all return vents and use compressed air blown through rods and whips to agitate dust and debris, pushing everything toward our extraction hose. After the returns are cleaned, they continue the same process to clean the supply side of your HVAC system. Once the supplies are cleaned, they use a fogger to sanitize and deodorize the entire system.
There was little to no disturbance within the home. Only one air hose was brought in, while a larger tubing remained outside the home.
One crew member focused on the vents while the other prepped the duct work around the furnace.
